The Superstitious (2007-2008) is a show about how I as an Artist, isolated from the outside world, began Psycho-analises myself like a subject of research. Soon I could feel like an animal inside a cage.
The need of being “out there”, as an Artist, to “exhibit”, after a long period of being isolated, is what reminded me of Franz Kafka‘s story of Red-Peter the ape in “Report to the Academy”.
The “evolution” or “sublimation” of one to become a part of society, to express himself in an “acceptable manner” is what asked from an Artist; very often, the Artist being thought of “crazy man”, revolting, yet genious; the “crowd” is gathered together, in a one night openning to watch the show.
“Knowledge” and “enlightment” are key-words of this exhibition. The Painters represent the Artist, hold the key to balance between logic and animal behavior, and often, alongside logic, the artist holds a Superstitious and mystical belief.
The Psychologist as the “enlightened” is represented by Dr. Sigmund Freud, and his logic is Satanic. An example of this attitude towards logic can be found in the Romantic movement of the 18th-19th century.
On the other side of this, one figure, “the Optimist”, is sitted confident and arrogant on the green green grass, with the book by his side and a pencil in his hand. If he is he a scholar or a student, he represents the new generation of the world of reason.
